1. General information
This elective (S1) is an important milestone for the academic and professional training of students interested in Antiquity. It aims at an effective interaction of Archaeology with the various disciplines that intervene in the discovery and analysis of material culture in classical antiquity and therefore place it before the subject and the historical context. It is recommended that students have taken or are taking other subjects related to the antiquity included in this same itinerary.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).

2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, students must demonstrate the following learning results:
Acquires critical analysis skills, uses the sources and the various specific disciplines that deal with them.
Knows and applies the methods and techniques of other social sciences to the study and treatment of archaeological information of the classical period.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the interconnections that articulate Greek and Roman societies in relation to present history.
Is able to analyse and understand with a critical spirit the sources that are specific to the societies they studies in order to value this historical-cultural heritage.
3. Syllabus
1. Concept of classicism
2. Classical archaeology: general considerations and historiography.
3. Pre-Hellenic cultures
4. Greek archaeology: urban planning and architecture.
5. Greek archaeology: sculpture, ornamentation, ceramics.
6. Origins, formation and development of the Etruscan culture.
7. Roman archaeology: urban planning and architecture.
8. Roman archaeology: sculpture, ornamentation, ceramics.
9. The crisis of the Classical World.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical and practical classes, seminars, individual or group work. In accordance with the number of hours assigned to the subject, the lectures given by the teacher and the practical classes carried out with the didactic collections of the Department of Antiquity Sciences will have special relevance. These activities will be complemented by external practices in archaeological sites, museums, attendance to conferences and seminars related to the content of the program.
5. Assessment system
First call
a) Continuous assessment system
1) Practical exercises: carried out during the whole term, after explanation of their characteristics, dates and procedure. 30% of the grade.
2) Participation and readings: Participation in seminars organized to complete the academic training. Individual work, the format and content of which may be chosen by the student, always with the supervision and acquiescence of the teacher.
Reviews of readings. 20% of the grade.
3) Written test on the contents of the syllabus. Two of a total of three topics must be developed. 50% of the grade (25% each subject).
b) Global assessment test (on the date established in the academic calendar)
1) Theory part: develop two topics out of a set of three. (60% of the final grade: 30 % each subject)).
2) Practical part: identify images and comment on them (40% of the final grade).
Second call (to be held on the date established in the academic calendar): the system and criteria of the global evaluation test are the same as in the first call.
In all the sections and calls, clarity, coherence and originality in the approach will be valued, as well as the critical contributions derived from the bibliographical review and the spelling.
